Gibraltar sits at the narrow entrance to the Mediterranean Sea, where ships pass between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean. Whoever controlled Gibraltar could monitor or influence one of the world's most important shipping routes. During the War of the Spanish Succession, a fleet of British and Dutch forces fighting on behalf of the Austrian claimant to the Spanish throne captured Gibraltar from Spain in 1704.
