The Rincón del Bonete hydroelectric plant is not only one of Uruguay's most impressive engineering feats: it also holds a history steeped in symbolism, secrets, and controversy. During its construction in the 1930s, it was a source of national pride, a technological milestone of global reach, but at the same time, it served as a platform for dark ties to Nazism, at the height of Hitler's power in Europe. A recently released documentary, "Memoria sumergida," revisits that chapter of our history, analyzing how the dam shaped the country's economic and social development and, at the same time, became a gateway for the interests and infiltration of the National Socialist Party in Uruguay. With this film, directed by Miguel Presno, currently being shown at the Nelly Goitiño Auditorium, in mind, we focused on the events it addresses and their echoes in our present.
