Our visual culture - how do the images we see shape our view of the past and the present?
In this video series —created specifically for secondary education— Mickey explores his Indonesian heritage and discovers how it plays a role in his life and in his surroundings. This episode focuses on the theme of visual culture. Mickey talks with media scholar Reza Kartosen-Wong about the origins of colonial stereotypes in propaganda and the media. Together, they explore how our visual culture has been shaped by the colonial past, and how that continues to perpetuate stereotypes to this day. The youth panel also joins the discussion: what have they learned—and, more importantly, what haven’t they learned—in school about this colonial history?
