Thomas d’Ansembourg – La Paix ça s’apprend comme les maths ou le foot !

Conference by Thomas d’Ansembourg on April 19, 2017 – How to develop our civic awareness and put the best of ourselves at the service of all and the development of the world – organized by ACNV-BF and MDD in Louvain-la-Neuve Description: Peace is something that can be learned, just like math or soccer! Learning to live in peace with oneself and with others, understanding what happens within oneself or others when one is no longer at peace, how to find peace within oneself or accompany others on this path – these are fundamental skills that, nevertheless, are not part of school curricula. Thomas d’Ansembourg invites us to examine the power dynamics that have governed our relationships for millennia, to question our thought patterns at both the individual and societal levels, to sit in the chair of discernment, and to step outside our comfort zones: a crucial aspect of living together. He invites us, in a moment of self-awareness, to explore our sensations and feelings—pleasant or unpleasant, expansion or contraction—and the underlying needs that are being met or not. These explorations allow us to grasp what we want to experience, where we want to go, and the needs we must take care of ourselves, responsibly, without blaming others or making them pay for our frustrations. These are elements of the grammar of Nonviolent Communication (NVC). He observes that in the lifestyle we have created, we have learned more to compensate for our inner unease than to nurture our deep well-being; he observes that our society has generated movements of hatred and revenge that lead to the tragic attacks we have witnessed and to "react" to, without fundamentally questioning itself or using the existing relational tools. He invites each of us to a questioning that is anything but naive, aimed at transforming ourselves for a more discerning and responsible citizenship. He guides us through, with concrete and detailed examples, four pitfalls which, when identified and addressed through the processes of Nonviolent Communication (NVC), are transformed from obstacles to relationships into opportunities for listening and synergy: Judgments Prejudices, beliefs, and categorizations "You must" Binary thinking or duality. He also expresses his delight at the growth of the online group created a few weeks ago to discuss "Peace Can Be Learned," the silent revolution of Cultural Creatives, and encourages us to embrace this transformative approach, this practice of cultivating awareness, to help us grow and open ourselves to the world.
