Anavarza Ancient City (Adana) [2014] Located 28 km south of Kozan district in Adana, the ancient city of Anavarza (Anazarbos/Caesarea ad Anabarsum) is situated within the boundaries of today's Dilekkaya Village. In the 1st century BC, the Romans left the administration of the Ceyhan basin, which they had conquered, to Tarkondimotos, whom they appointed as a vassal king. Anavarza, which gradually gained power during the Roman period and was in competition with Tarsus, the giant city of the ancient world, for the leadership of the Cilician League at the end of the 2nd century AD, became one of the most important metropolises of Anatolia from this date onwards. Anavarza obtained many military privileges in the 3rd century AD, receiving the title of "Metropolis" and, until the middle of the same century, the title of "Neokoros" three times. In subsequent periods, Anavarza came under the rule of the Eastern Roman Empire, Arabs, and Armenians, and was taken by the Mamluks in 1375. After this period, there was no large-scale settlement in the city. Among the significant remains found in Anavarza are a 1500-meter-long city wall with 20 towers, a colonnaded road, a bathhouse and church, a theater, an amphitheater, a stadium, aqueducts, rock tombs, a mosaic of the sea goddess Thetys dating back to the 3rd century AD, a triumphal arch with three entrances (the only one of its kind in the Cilicia region), and a medieval castle perched on a hill rising like an island in the middle of the plain.
