Kastabala Ancient City - Osmaniye Kastabala-Hierapolis is located in southeastern Anatolia, 12 kilometers north-northwest of Osmaniye, on the Cevdetiye Town-Karatepe Museum road, between the villages of Kesmeburun, Bahçe and Kazmaca. The city is situated overlooking a small plain near the Ceyhan (Pyramos) River. Surface finds from the Cilicia region, where Kastabala is located, date to different periods between 2nd millennium BC and the Roman Imperial-Late Roman periods. However, the archaeology of Kastabala during the Roman Imperial period (1st millennium BC) has not yet been sufficiently researched. The results of the excavations, which were first started in the city in 2009 and are still ongoing, have already changed the known history of the city. The presence of finds dating to the Late Neolithic-Early Chalcolithic; 5th century BC, 1st century BC - 1st century AD, 2nd century AD, 4th-6th centuries AD, and 13th-15th centuries AD promises to complete the missing information about the archaeology of Kastabala and the region. The ongoing excavations and research in the city reveal that its boundaries encompassed a fertile plain stretching from the Ceyhan River in the south, Karatepe in the north, and Kırmıtlı Bird Sanctuary in the west. It was surrounded by walls. The structures in the city center are located on the northern, southern, and eastern slopes of a small valley dominated by the castle hill. Rocky natural elevations form the natural boundary of the settlement to the north. In the northwest of the city, a passage carved into the rock at the northeastern foot of the castle connects the western and eastern residential areas. It is thought that the ancient city was not surrounded by a city wall during the Roman Imperial Period (2nd century AD), and that the first defense system was built at the end of the 4th century AD. In terms of city planning, the colonnaded street defines the main axis of the settlement. Flat terraces were obtained on the sloping terrain with walls and vaults. In the grid-planned city built on the hillside, the central building and public buildings are placed in the middle of the site. The theater, baths, shops, and the northern and southern churches were built on plots according to this plan. The medieval castle rises on a rocky hill suitable for defense. The first construction phase of the existing public buildings dates back to the Severan period. The area where the ancient city of Kastabala expanded is surrounded on the rugged rocky slopes to the east, north, and south. There are numerous tombs.
