This parade was held to celebrate the 79th anniversary of Sindumartani Village at the Sindu Sport Center Field in Kentingan, Sindumartani, Ngemplak, Sleman. BREGADA JAYA WILAPA was present and joined other hamlets to represent Old Pencarsari Subdistrict in a cultural parade commemorating the anniversary of the village located on the slopes of Mount Merapi. Bregada, also known as bergodo or bregodo, is the term for a group or unit of traditional military troops from the Javanese palaces, particularly in Yogyakarta and Surakarta. The word "𝗯𝗿𝗲𝗴𝗮𝗱𝗮" itself is derived from English or Dutch, meaning "𝘣𝘳𝘪𝘨𝘢𝘥𝘦", meaning a group of military troops. Pre-independence, the bregada were the palace's armed forces, serving as security guards and safeguarding the sovereignty of the state/kingdom (royal army). They were trained and equipped with weapons such as spears, keris, and arrows. In Yogyakarta, since the palace declared its integration with the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI) after independence in 1945, the bregada's primary function shifted from being a royal army to being a force that safeguards culture and tradition, as well as complementing traditional ceremonies. They also often appear to welcome guests of honor and nobility, and enliven celebrations or cultural parades, escorting mountains of agricultural produce and sacred heirlooms. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗶𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲'𝘀 𝗕𝗿𝗲𝗴𝗮𝗱𝗮 Witnessing the unique marching and gallantry of the palace soldiers, communities in several villages and hamlets in Yogyakarta took the initiative to form their own independent old javanese military groups, called people's bregada. The names of these bregada are usually adapted to their region, characteristics, history, and origins, such as the BREGADA JAYA WILAPA. BREGADA JAYA WILAPA is a form of citizen participation in preserving the old javanese military traditions rooted in the Yogyakarta Palace. Unlike the palace brigades, which are comprised of official courtiers, these people's bregada are formed purely by the community and are a major attraction, enlivening local events in the village, even at the village/sub-district level, as in this video. It is also hoped that the community groups will develop into independent and creative drivers of the local economy. Each group must continue to be enthusiastic about practicing diligently to improve the neatness of their marching, the quality of their music, and the beauty of their costumes to become even more attractive and potentially open up business opportunities, such as providing ceremonial services to enliven wedding receptions and other celebratory events. Hopefully, BREGADA JAYA WILAPA and other community groups in the Special Region of Yogyakarta will continue to exist and become new tourism icons and cultural heritage that must be preserved and enjoyed by the younger generation.
