POEM TO THE CASSOCK The cassock is a gift from on high for the priest. The cassock reminds the priest that he must die to the world, to the devil, and to the flesh. The priest cannot dress, nor speak, nor enjoy himself as the world does. The priest must be on guard against the devil's deceptions. The priest will be dead if he does not yearn for intimacy with God, sleep on the ground if necessary, sleep on boards if necessary, frequently wear the hair shirt; always good, always holy. The cassock continues to remind us where we must direct our lives. There is nothing, neither inside nor outside the Church, that can touch the holy cassock. When we die, we will be shrouded in our holy cassock.
