Raking for Blue Swimmer Crabs at Port Parham (Crabbing) was heaps of fun! Port Parham is about an hour's drive from Adelaide and is famous for its blue swimmer crabs and is a great spot for crabbing. We spent around an hour one spring morning raking there in shallow water at low tide with Beau, who was an experienced crab raker. We had never been raking for blue swimmer crabs (crabbing) before and Beau showed us exactly what to do. In about an hour and a half we had caught just over twenty 'keepers'. It was so easy! Probably the hardest part was not getting nipped by the crabs running around in the water. All that you need to crab this way is a rake, a plastic tub attached to a rope (to tie around your waist), a crab measurer and fishing shoes or old sneakers to protect your feet. If the weather is warm you also need an ice slurry in the tub to keep them fresh. When we went raking it was a cool day so we put our crabs on ice in our esky when we got back to the car. We made an Asian noodle dish with our crabs, but have also enjoyed them in a pasta sauce or steamed whole and eaten straight from the shell.
