How to make a mortar and pestle from an oak board on a lathe. I was asked to make a mortar and pestle out of wood as a gift. I decided to make one from a 50-pound oak board. I had to glue two pieces together to achieve the desired dimensions. The mortar is 90 mm high and 85 mm in diameter. The interior cavity is 65 mm in diameter and 65 mm deep. I turned the pestle to a length of 125 mm, with a maximum diameter of 43 mm. I treated it with extra-virgin linseed oil from the grocery store. I also turned a 110 mm tall glass from a spare blank. First, I primed it with a "tobacco oak" oil, then polished it with carnauba wax. I mainly used a 9.5 mm reamer. I bored it with a #1 Bruxchen chisel (link below). I did the final scraping with wax to prevent the wood grain from becoming nicked. The final design wasn't quite medieval, but it was overall pretty.
