During the Middle Ages, sub-Saharan Africa witnessed the rise of great kingdoms and empires that flourished thanks to trade, political organization, and a sophisticated culture. In this video, we explore the Kingdom of Ghana, the first great empire in West Africa; the Sultanate of Kanem-Bornu in the Lake Chad Basin; the Kingdom of Benin, famous for its bronze art; and the mysterious walled city of Great Zimbabwe in southern Africa. The Kingdom of Ghana (7th–13th centuries) controlled the gold and salt routes between the Sahara and the Sahel, with a monumental capital and an organized army. To the east, Kanem-Bornu (9th–19th centuries) was an important Islamic state that connected Central Africa with the Arab world.
