Long before the Mongols, the steppes of Central Asia were already inhabited by nomadic peoples skilled in warfare, archery, and cavalry. In this video, we explore the great protagonists of prehistory and antiquity of the steppes: the Scythians, Sarmatians, Xiongnu, Rouran, and the fearsome Huns who terrorized Rome under Attila. The Scythians and Sarmatians, Iranian peoples of the Pontic steppes, dominated the routes between Europe and Asia from the first millennium BC. Their equestrian culture, burial mounds (kurgans), and ferocity were recorded by Greek and Roman authors. Further east, the Xiongnu formed a large nomadic confederation that challenged the Han Empire in China, forcing the construction of the Great Wall. Their political structure would influence many later steppe empires. The lesser-known Rouran were the first to use the title of khan and preceded the Turks and Mongols as a power in Mongolia.
