Sermon Title: "Rebuke for the Sake of Forgiveness" Sermon Text: Isaiah 1:1-20 Isaiah Chapter 1 1 In the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah king of Judah, the vision that Isaiah son of Amos saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem. 2 Hear, O heavens, and listen, O earth; for the LORD has spoken: “I have nourished and brought up children, yet they have rebelled against Me. 3 The ox knows its owner, and the donkey its master’s manger; but Israel does not know, and my people do not understand.” 4 Woe to the nation that has sinned, the people burdened with iniquity, the offspring of evildoers, the children whose conduct is corrupt. They have forsaken the LORD; they have treated the Holy One of Israel with contempt, and have turned away from him. 5 Why do you continue to rebel, seeking more punishment? Your whole head is sick, and your whole heart is weary. 6 From the soles of your feet to the top of your head there is no soundness, but bruises, ruptures, and fresh blows. And you squeeze them. You have not been bound up, nor softened with oil. 7 Your land is desolate, and your cities are burned; your land has been swallowed up by the Gentiles before your very eyes, and has been laid waste as if destroyed by the Gentiles. 8 Daughter Zion is barely left, like a watchtower in a vineyard, like a hut in a melon field, like a besieged city. 9 If the LORD of hosts had not left us a few survivors, we would have been like Sodom and Gomorrah. 10 Hear the word of the LORD, you rulers of Sodom; listen to the law of our God, you people of Gomorrah. 11 The LORD says: “What good are your countless sacrifices to me? I am satiated with the burnt offerings of rams and the fat of fattened animals; I take no delight in the blood of bulls, lambs, or goats. 12 You come to appear before me; who required this of you? You trample my courts.” 13 Your vain sacrifices again Do not bring incense, for it is an abomination to me; likewise the new moons, the Sabbaths, and your assemblies; I cannot endure your evil in the midst of your solemn assemblies. 14 My soul detests your new moons and your appointed feasts; they are a heavy burden to me, and I am weary of bearing them. 15 When you spread out your hands, I will hide my eyes from you; though you pray much, I will not listen, for your hands are full of blood. 16 Wash yourselves and cleanse yourselves; put away your evil deeds from my sight and cease doing evil. 17 Learn to do good, seek justice, help the oppressed, plead the case of the orphan, and defend the widow. 18 The Lord says: “Come now, let us reason together. Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are crimson, they shall be as white as wool. 19 If you are willing and obedient, you shall eat the good things of the land. 20 If you refuse and rebel, "It will be swallowed up by the sword," declares the mouth of the LORD.
