His Arm Was Crushed in Pakistan | Now He Needs a New Beginning in India | HSF

Eight years ago, Girdhari Ram's life changed forever. While working in Pakistan, his arm was caught in a fodder-cutting machine. The injury was so severe that rods had to be inserted to save and stabilize his arm. Today, Girdhari Ram and Pathani Behan are raising their three young children in Dhaulasar, Phalodi (Rajasthan). Like many vulnerable Hindu refugee families, they survive through tenant farming. But farming has become an increasingly difficult struggle. Because of his damaged arm, Girdhari Ram cannot perform many essential farming tasks. The family often has to hire labourers even for sowing seeds, harvesting crops, and other field work. By the time these expenses are paid, very little income remains for the family itself. The pain in his arm has also started returning. The family told us they never considered having more children because they were already struggling to meet basic expenses. Despite these hardships, they continue to send their children to school. However, the children are often forced to help with farming work, which affects their education and future opportunities. When we visited them, Girdhari Ram said something that stayed with us: "I can't do this anymore." The family does not want charity. They want a chance to rebuild their future. Their request is simple: A small home and an opportunity to move away from tenant farming before it is too late. A permanent home would allow them to seek labour work, small business opportunities, and other sources of income without being trapped in an increasingly unprofitable farming cycle.
