Nao Katafuchi - Love And Superstitions
Nao Katafuchi is a Japanese electronic musician, producer, and audio engineer best known for his distinctive blend of minimal synth, darkwave, synthpop, and coldwave, which he describes as "dark romantic wave." His music combines vintage analog electronics, melancholic melodies, guitar textures, and dreamy vocals, drawing inspiration from both 1980s Japanese electronic music and European post-punk. Growing up in the suburbs of Tokyo during Japan's technological boom of the 1980s, Katafuchi became fascinated with synthesizers, electronic instruments, and the city's emerging underground music culture. As a teenager he frequently explored Tokyo's music shops and record stores, absorbing influences ranging from synthpop and new wave to experimental electronic music. The futuristic atmosphere of the era became a lasting influence on his retro-futuristic sound. In 1991 he relocated to New York City's Lower East Side, where he worked professionally as an audio engineer for recording studios. During the early 2000s he founded an experimental electronic rock project called Superfortress, releasing several self-produced recordings while developing his own musical identity. Eventually he shifted away from rock-oriented arrangements toward a more synthesizer-driven style. Around 2010, Katafuchi immersed himself in New York's influential Wierd Records scene, a hub for the revival of minimal synth and coldwave. Performing alongside artists such as Xeno & Oaklander, Martial Canterel, Led Er Est, Figure Study, and Epee Du Bois, he established himself as part of the city's modern minimal synth movement. This period led to his debut EP, Yumegoto, released by WT Records in 2012, earning praise for its nostalgic yet modern electronic sound. Following several European tours, Katafuchi moved to Germany in 2015, where he became active in the country's long-established darkwave and synth scene. His debut album, Émergence (2015), expanded his cinematic and romantic sound while featuring guest appearances from Liz Wendelbo and Japanese synth veterans including Kevin Komoda. His second album, Stahlgrau (2019), adopted a darker, more industrial edge inspired by Germany's Ruhr region, emphasizing analog synthesizers, deeper vocals, and EBM influences. Stylistically, Nao Katafuchi's music is characterized by: Lush analog synthesizers and vintage drum machines, sparse but melodic arrangements, melancholic, introspective songwriting, influences from Japanese city pop, European coldwave, and minimal synth, a cinematic, nostalgic atmosphere often described as "retro-futuristic." Although he remains a relatively underground artist, Nao Katafuchi is highly respected among enthusiasts of minimal synth, darkwave, and coldwave for bridging Japanese and Western electronic traditions with a deeply personal, atmospheric sound. Beyond his own recordings, Katafuchi has contributed to preserving Japan's electronic music heritage by assisting with reissues of obscure 1980s Japanese synth artists, including Tomo Akikawabaya, and participating in archival and production projects focused on forgotten Japanese minimal wave music. https://kernkrach.bandcamp.com/album/...
