In practically the entire world, to reach this altitude, you would need to climb a mountain. And it would probably be an uninhabited region. This Bolivian city has thin air, making breathing there more difficult. But this city has almost 2 million inhabitants. Why do so many people live in La Paz? Why did they choose to live in such a difficult environment for human habitation? La Paz has been named the highest capital in the world… As some know, the true capital of Bolivia is called Sucre. However, La Paz is home to the seat of government and the assembly palace. And the city that isn't the capital has all the characteristics of what other countries consider a capital. A city this high doesn't usually have many inhabitants; if we consider the metropolitan area, we have over 2 million inhabitants. In this case, we'll count the nearby territories outside of La Paz as the city of El Alto. A self-explanatory name, since the city is called El Alto. To better understand how high the city is, let's imagine that four out of every five countries in the world have their highest points well below the altitude of La Paz. And all places higher than this mark are practically uninhabited. People choose not to live where the air is thin or living conditions are more difficult. Very high places, like La Paz, pose interesting challenges for those who live in or depend on these regions. For people, the thin air, with less oxygen, can cause fatigue, headaches, and that feeling of shortness of breath, especially for those who are not accustomed to it. Over time, the body adapts, producing more red blood cells, but this can strain the heart in some people. Furthermore, solar radiation is more intense due to less protection from the atmosphere, which requires more care for the skin. Plants grow more slowly. The cold and strong winds severely limit the species that can survive, and vegetation tends to be shorter and more resilient, such as mosses and grasses. Trees are rare, and biodiversity is not as rich as in lower altitudes. Animals living in these areas, however, have developed incredible adaptations. Llamas and alpacas, for example, have larger lungs and more efficient oxygen-capturing blood. They also have thick fur to cope with the cold. But not all animals thrive in these conditions—reproduction and the development of young can be more difficult at high altitudes. Despite the harsh conditions, La Paz is teeming with people!
