No matter what type of map you look at, this division appears clearly and indisputably. Look at the 2011 population density map: the main cities in the North are much closer to each other, while in the South the urban concentration is much smaller. The same happens with the map of modern highways: the infrastructure in the North is extensive and connected, while in the South it seems almost forgotten. But why does this happen? Wealth is almost entirely concentrated in the North, while the South continues to struggle to keep up – a historical and economic divide that Italy has not been able to overcome to this day. In 2021, the economic data made it clear: Southern Italy produces significantly less wealth per person than the North. The divide is clear and relentless. The South, defined as everything below this line on the map, represents about a third of Italy’s territory and population, but generates only a quarter of the country’s total GDP.
