On the feast of St. Onuphrius the Great, Father Turbo reflects on Christ’s invitation in Matthew 11:27–30: “Take My yoke upon you... for My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” The world promises us freedom by gaining more things, by fulfilling fewer and fewer obligations, and by the unrestricted satisfaction of our desires. Yet this type of freedom only creates heavier souls. Orthodox asceticism presents a different path. Through its prayer, self-denial, spiritual discipline, and the struggle against the passions, Christians learn to reject these vanities, ego, and self-will that keep our minds earthbound. Father Turbo also clarifies why the modern romantic image of St. Onuphrius as a wild, rule-free “mountain man” completely overlooks the point. Onuphrius wasn't free because no one told him what to do. He found release by taking up Christ's yoke, crucifying his passions, and being liberated from the world's influence. This liberty is genuine Christian freedom: rather than being the absence of a yoke, it's our acceptance of this one burden that makes our souls light. Can you still see the bird?
