Grading the Urban Sea - David Abreu for Save the Sound

Join David Abreu from Save the Sound as he discusses the latest releases of the Long Island Sound Report Card and Beach Report. The Report Card grades the ecological health of the open water of the Sound in addition to numerous bays and harbors. The Beach Report provides grades for over 200 beaches around the shoreline focusing on how safe the water is for swimming. David will present an overview of the water quality data sources, grading processes, and then dive into the grades with an emphasis on what we can all do to protect and restore our local waters. David’ Abreu’s advocacy work centers around communities with longstanding water pollution problems, with a focus on designated environmental justice communities. Through his grading work on the Long Island Sound report card and Beach Report, and in working alongside Save the Sound’s water quality team and Unified Water Study partners, David strives to put data to action that will tackle pollution with an eye towards long term solutions. David is from the Bronx, New York, where he has experienced the environmental injustices that have impacted so many communities around New York City. While he holds a degree in computer science and cybersecurity from Iona University, David decided to pivot to a career in environmental science to help push for the solutions and strategies that will prepare communities like his to deal with the effects of climate change.
