Important clarification: Interoception refers to the perception of the physiological state of the entire body, such as energy levels, well-being, stress levels, and mood. According to Craig, it forms the neurobiological basis for feelings, emotions, and self-awareness. (Craig, A.D., Nature Reviews Neuroscience, 2002) Proprioception perceives the position, orientation, and movement of the body in space—that is, the signals from muscles, tendons, and joints. It is part of the somatic system, which controls movement and motor function. (Craig, A.D., Current Opinion in Neurobiology, 2003) Proprioception is therefore not the opposite of interoception, but rather a sub-aspect of the broader body awareness.
