Vita extraterrestre: come cercarla con la PALEONTOLOGIA
How to search for extraterrestrial life? Using icnology, the branch of paleontology that deals with burrows, footprints and tracks. I'm Andrea Baucon, paleontologist at the University of Genoa, and in this video documentary I will present my new scientific idea that connects fossils and astrobiology! ❤️ Subscribe to stay updated on paleontological content like this: https://www.youtube.com/terragaze/?su... Mars, Enceladus, Titan, Europa: several moons and planets present conditions favorable to life, but extraterrestrial life could be different from what we know. For example, alien organisms may have an unfamiliar form and chemistry. How, then, to recognize extraterrestrial life if it differs from that on Earth? I propose to answer this question by focusing on the fossilized traces of substrate interaction (icnofossils). The idea is not to look for aliens, but to locate their burrows, borings, trails and footprints. During the video I will show you the two strengths that make ichnofossils ideal for the (scientific) search for extraterrestrial life. I will show you this new approach through examples from Liguria, Friuli-Venezia Giulia and Portugal. The sediment can record the activity of relatively large organisms - think of 🦖 dinosaur footprints - but also of microscopic organisms. In some coasts of Grado, microorganisms 'stick' the sand, producing structures that resemble mats (microbialitic mats). Traces of life-substrate interaction are common on Earth, and their fossils can survive even the enormous pressures and temperatures generated by the collision between continents. In this regard, we will see the wonderful trilobite (Cruziana) traces preserved in the metamorphic rocks (quartzites) of Penha Garcia in Portugal. Also for this reason, ichnofossils are ideal for the scientific research of extraterrestrial life. It will be a journey into paleontology and astrobiology, between Earth Sciences and Life Sciences ...
