PTSD + Addiction | Why Treatment So Often Fails

Treating PTSD and substance use disorders simultaneously is one of the most difficult challenges in mental health and addiction treatment. In this video, I discuss some of the major clinical obstacles therapists, counselors, and treatment programs face when working with co-occurring trauma and addiction. Topics include emotional dysregulation, relapse risk, avoidance, shame, readiness for trauma work, stabilization, meaning-centered recovery, and integrated treatment approaches such as CBT, REBT, Motivational Interviewing, and Seeking Safety. I also announce an upcoming in-depth Zoom lecture where these topics will be explored in much greater practical and clinical detail. Please subscribe and watch for upcoming registration details. This educational presentation is intended for informational and training purposes only and should not be considered psychotherapy, clinical supervision, medical advice, diagnosis, or a substitute for individualized mental health or addiction treatment. The views expressed are those of the presenter and are intended to encourage critical thinking, clinical reflection, and professional discussion. Any clinical examples or vignettes presented are fictionalized composites derived from general clinical themes and do not represent any actual client or identifiable individual. Although evidence-informed treatment approaches are discussed, clinical decision-making should always consider each client's individual needs, readiness, safety, culture, and treatment context. Individuals experiencing psychological distress, trauma-related symptoms, suicidal thoughts, or substance use problems are encouraged to seek assistance from qualified mental health, medical, or emergency professionals in their local area. #PTSD #AddictionRecovery #TraumaTherapy #SubstanceUseDisorder #CBT #REBT #TraumaInformedCare #MentalHealthEducation #SeekingSafety #MotivationalInterviewing #Psychotherapy #TherapistEducation #Recovery #CoOccurringDisorders #TraumaRecovery
