Mike Mitchell: The FORGOTTEN Scoring Machine of the 80s Spurs
Mike Mitchell wasn’t the highest jumper or the best defender, but you could guarantee that he would crash the glass and get to his spots in the midrange. Mike would pull up and shoot over anyone, sometimes posting up or using a shot fake to get to the rim. Mike was a 20 point scorer for 7 out of his 11 NBA seasons, becoming an All-Star with the Cavs in 1981, before forming a nice wing duo with George Gervin as they guided the Spurs as far as the Western Conference Finals. After injuries affected his last two years with the Spurs, he would go overseas and have a successful decade-long international career, even rejoining the Spurs for their playoff run in 1990. Although Mike was a great player during his time in the league, he’s completely forgotten by most fans, maybe because his best years were either spent on losing Cleveland teams, or as a sidekick to the Iceman.
