Dallas Chaparrals: All The Potential, None Of The Success

They say everything is bigger in Texas, so when investors pooled their money together to form an ABA team in Dallas, it was no surprise that they had the deepest pockets amongst all the owners. But unfortunately, they seemed to be penny pinchers, as they refused to spend money on their team. They were rarely able to sign any of their high draft picks, so they mostly used local talent and players whom they felt wouldn’t ask for too much. They always stayed competitive, but they could never reach the mountaintop. They even tried regionality at one point, but after multiple failures, a move to San Antonio would finally bring them major success. Along with the addition of a cool cucumber, the newly named Spurs would prove to be a viable franchise, one that the NBA deemed worthy of being absorbed into the fold. The Spurs have been extremely successful after the merger, never being devoid of Hall of Fame talent, as their 5 championship rings are by far the most out of the former ABA teams, and with Victor Wembenyama leading the charge, they will most likely be adding to that total in the near future.
