Assateague Island National Seashore, a unit of the National Park Service, occupies a 37-mile barrier island along the Atlantic Ocean straddling Maryland and Virginia, where the only permanent residents are wildlife -- including two herds of wild horses! We came here to experience the Mid-Atlantic coastline in its natural state including beaches and sand dunes on the Atlantic Ocean side, and salt marsh islands on the bay side. We'll camp right at the beach, explore the National Seashore and its horses, visit the towns of Berlin, Ocean City & Chincoteague, and kayak the island, so come along!
