Keir Starmer has handed Andy Burnham a major defence headache after unveiling a long-delayed military spending plan that is still billions short of full funding. Although the package promises extra cash for drones, warships, missiles and Britain’s nuclear programme, only part of the money has actually been found, leaving a £4.7 billion gap to be dealt with later. Critics say the plan is a delayed-action poison pill for Burnham, who is set to take over in weeks and may now have to find the missing cash himself. The row also raises fresh doubts over whether Labour’s big defence promises are properly funded or just being pushed into the future.
