The first truly wild horses to touch that ground in over 200 years. The soil beneath them was biologically broken — sixty years of Soviet collective farming had compressed it into a crust so hard that rainwater ran straight off the surface without infiltrating. Within hours, they were grazing. Within months, the soil was changing. By year eight, native plant species had returned to grazed areas at three times the rate of adjacent untreated land. By year fifteen, what had been uniform degraded pasture was a living mosaic of grass communities that hadn't existed on that steppe since before collectivisation.
