Kazakhstan Protected 21,000 Saigas in a Dead Steppe — What They Did to the Grass Shocked the World

A species that had outlived the woolly mammoth and three ice ages had been reduced to almost nothing in thirteen years of poaching. There was no obvious reason the number would be higher in 2004. Then Kazakhstan stopped the hunting. In December 2023, the IUCN announced the result: 1.9 million saigas. The most dramatic wildlife recovery of the 21st century. And a problem nobody had planned for.
