8 track repair: broken splice & winding tape back onto hub
This video shows how you can rewind the 8 track tape back onto the tape hub if the splice broke and the tape got pulled into the machine. You may have to disassemble the machine to get the tape out without breaking it. Usually it is wrapped around the capstan. Then clean the tape with Iso Alcohol, iron out wrinkles and follow the rest of this video. Good Luck. For tapes that you have not played before it is very important to pull out the tape once you come to a program change to examine the status of the splice. Almost always prone to splice breaking are the cartridges with the 3 (sometimes 2 [older ones]) tab slots on the label top (used mostly on Columbia [CBS, TC8] labels) that you press on to open with a small blade jeweler's screwdriver, and the RCA riveted type tapes [I have videos on opening these]); ALWAYS CHECK THESE! When you can examine the splice, pull the tape out far enough (with clean hands) so that you can gently tug on the tape on either side of the splice and also flex/bend around the splice it to see if the splice stays intact. Any indication of the splice lifting off the tape, the splice needs to be replaced. Really check these well. In the past, I've just visually checked some splices thinking they were OK and then 2-3 passes later, the splice broke. Another helpful thing to do is to mark your tapes with a marker or pen on the underside front of the tape once you have checked the splice at the program change point as follows: "/" means that you checked the splice previously and it looks good enough to play without pulling it out at the track change in the future "X" means that the splice broke before and you replaced/fixed it already. With several tapes you're bound to forget what their splice status is ; )
