In a stroke, time is brain. Every minute makes the difference between life, death, and the degree of sequelae. In this opening video of the series on stroke, I, Dr. Claudio Gabriele, a vascular surgeon in Bauru, clearly explain what a stroke is, the two main types, why it is an absolute emergency, and what you need to do if you suspect someone is having a stroke. WHAT IS A STROKE: A stroke (also called a cerebrovascular accident) occurs when a part of the brain stops receiving blood adequately—or when bleeding occurs inside the brain. Because the brain needs blood and oxygen all the time, any interruption begins to cause neuronal death within minutes. THE TWO MAIN TYPES OF STROKE: • Ischemic stroke — blockage of an artery by fatty plaque, clot, or altered circulation. It is the most common. • Hemorrhagic stroke — rupture of a blood vessel inside the brain. Blood leaks out and compresses important areas. WHAT TO DO IN CASE OF A STROKE: ✅ Call SAMU 192 or the Fire Department 193 immediately. ✅ Note the time the symptoms started — this information is critical for the medical team. ✅ Take the person to the hospital as quickly as possible. WHAT NEVER TO DO: ❌ Wait to see if it improves. ❌ Let the person "sleep to rest". ❌ Give any medication on your own. ❌ Send them home thinking it was just a bout of illness. SPECIAL ATTENTION TO TIA: If the symptoms started and disappeared within minutes or a few hours, this could be a TIA — a transient ischemic attack, popularly called a "stroke threat". Even if everything seems to have returned to normal, it is a warning that a major stroke may occur. SEEK MEDICAL EVALUATION. RISK FACTORS: • High blood pressure • Diabetes • High cholesterol. • Smoking • Obesity • Sedentary lifestyle. • Heart disease and circulatory problems. Stroke can happen at any age — it's not exclusive to the elderly. Young people with risk factors are also affected.
