ACIDENTE VASCULAR CEREBRAL (AVC): Depois do AVC - recuperação, sequelas e qualidade de vida Ep.5
After a stroke, care continues. Hospital discharge is not the end of treatment—it's the beginning of a very important phase: recovery. In this video, I, Dr. Claudio Gabriele, a vascular surgeon in Bauru, explain what happens after a stroke, what the main after-effects are, how multidisciplinary rehabilitation works, and how to prevent a second stroke. The central message of this episode: rehabilitation is treatment. Controlling risk factors is treatment. Family support is treatment. Preventing a new stroke is treatment. MAIN AFTER-EFFECTS THAT MAY APPEAR: • Weakness on one side of the body (arm, leg, face). • Speech changes (aphasia: difficulty speaking, finding words, or understanding). • Difficulty swallowing (dysphagia—deserves attention due to the risk of choking). • Balance problems and risk of falls. • Emotional changes (sadness, anxiety, irritability). THE MULTIDISCIPLINARY TEAM THAT SUPPORTS RECOVERY: 🩺 Physician (vascular surgeon, neurologist, cardiologist) — continuous clinical monitoring and prevention of a new stroke. 🚶 Physiotherapy — recovery of movement, strength, balance, and independence. 🗣️ Speech therapy — rehabilitation of speech and swallowing. 🤲 Occupational therapy — relearning daily activities (bathing, dressing, feeding). 🧠 Psychology / Psychiatry — emotional support and treatment of post-stroke depression when necessary. 👨👩👧 Family — patience, support, and encouragement of autonomy. TO PREVENT A SECOND STROKE: • Control blood pressure, diabetes, and cholesterol. • Use prescribed medications correctly (anticoagulants, antiplatelet drugs, statins, antihypertensives). • NEVER discontinue medication on your own. • Keep up with your medical follow-up appointments. • In some cases, carotid artery evaluation is necessary — the vascular surgeon will advise on the best course of action. SPECIAL ATTENTION: Recovery is not the same for everyone. Each brain responds differently. Each body has its own timeline. Comparing patients only leads to frustration. The key is to trust the individualized plan. Important: This video is for informational purposes only and does not replace a medical consultation.
