The Battle of Northern Madagascar, 1942 | Holdouts in Northern Madagascar | Easy Red 2 Mod

Although Diego Suarez and Arrachart Airfield fell quickly, the fighting in northern Madagascar did not end immediately. Elements of the Vichy French garrison withdrew southward from the port area and established a series of defensive positions in the rugged countryside beyond Antsiranana. These holdouts hoped to delay the British advance, inflict casualties, and preserve a force that might continue resistance elsewhere on the island. The difficult terrain—marked by hills, ravines, and limited roads—favored the defenders and slowed British efforts to completely secure the region. Over the following days, British troops conducted patrols and mopping-up operations against isolated French strongpoints. Small engagements occurred as retreating Vichy units attempted to evade capture or maintain local resistance, but the loss of Diego Suarez and Arrachart Airfield had deprived them of their main bases, supplies, and communications. By mid-May, organized resistance in northern Madagascar had largely collapsed, leaving the Allies firmly in control of the strategic harbor. However, French forces farther south on the island remained intact, setting the stage for the broader Madagascar Campaign that continued until November 1942.
