Tracing the Armagh-Clones railway line on Google satellite and street view

The vast majority of the old Great Northern Railway route from Armagh to Clones via Monaghan is still intact and it would not be impossible to get this line restored. Incorporating this consideration into future plans for the Armagh-Portadown reopening would strengthen the case for restoring Armagh's station at its original location at the junction of Station Rd and Loughgall Rd. It would be an important part of plugging what is now a gaping hole in the northwest of the island's railway system. Clones was a major junction on the Irish network, with lines going out of the town in four directions to Armagh, Enniskillen, Cavan Town, and Castleblayney. Highlights of this journey include the Monaghan station building and the circular engine shed in Clones. The nearby Ulster Canal is also a great potential restoration project that would bring in much tourist and visitor enjoyment.
