Racing always has its own unique character, even if it's a hobby race without a license, an open race. It always feels like everything's at stake, at least for glory and honor :-) I'm taking you along to the Bosch-organized EMTB Challenge in Verbier, Switzerland. There are also other races in different locations. You pay €40 and you're a participant. Pick up your start board, transponder, and map, and you're ready to go. A 35km loop awaits, with six different timed sections (downhill, uphill, uphill and downhill, etc.). The entire loop must be completed in about 4-5 hours, with six timed stages in between. 3...2...1...Go...off to the stage and the clock starts. You're always racing against yourself and the clock. You're sent out onto the course alone at 20-30 second intervals. Then it's all about concentration. You have no idea what to expect, since the routes aren't practiced and you start blind. Whether you're fast or slow is also a mystery; there are no time estimates at this stage. All stage times are added together at the end, and that's your total time... You also have to find the landmarks on the map, otherwise you get a 10-second penalty. It's always exciting and thrilling to see what happens during and between the stages and what challenges you have to face, but see for yourselves... Take care... Bye for now...
