For hundreds of millions of people around the globe, this is not imagination but daily reality. According to the 2025 State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World (SOFI) report, jointly published by FAO, IFAD, UNICEF, WFP, and WHO, about 8.2 percent of the global population, or roughly 673 million people, experienced hunger in 2024. This essay argues that global hunger is driven by economic and environmental shocks, and that it can be reduced through targeted social protection, agricultural investment, and sustained international funding. The root of the hunger problem lies in a complex mix of poverty, conflict, and climate shocks that limit people's access to affordable, nutritious food. Since 2020, food price inflation has consistently outpaced overall inflation, peaking at 13.6 percent in January 2023, and reaching as high as 30 percent in low-income countries. This price surge has real consequences for children's health, since researchers found that a 10 percent rise in food prices is linked to a 2.7 to 4.3 percent increase in child wasting. Conflict compounds this vulnerability FAO Chief Economist Maximo Torero reported that in Africa, hunger continues to rise mainly because of conflict, along with debt-driven economic slowdowns and climate change, which prevent many countries from reaching the minimum calorie levels needed to escape hunger.
