The city grew on both banks of the Mohawk River, with the majority on the north bank. The city also includes the Port Jackson neighborhood on the south side. Prior to European settlement, the region that includes Amsterdam was inhabited for centuries by the Iroquois Confederacy's Mohawk tribe, which dominated most of the Mohawk Valley.
