Reduce, Re-use & Recycle in Nairobi’s Korogocho Slum, Kenya, 2010

The Ethical Fashion Initiative, flagship programme of the International Trade Centre, works with various local recycling programmes with the aim to benefit the environment and empowering local communities. The programme is particularly active in Kenya. Half of the four millions inhabitants of the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, live in slums overcrowded into an area that is equal only to 1% of the city’s territory. These people are fighting for survival every day and are living in extremely bad conditions - lack of drinking water, inadequate housing, and health insecurity. Only of the few options to make a living is to become a waste picker and many children are dropping school to go select reusable pieces of plastic or metal in dumpsites. Ethical Fashion Initiative provides a legal and sustainable alternative for these local communities.
