It's not cheap, that's true, but it scores many points to be the ideal car for many families. We test the KIA Ceed Tourer 1.6 MHEV diesel with 136 hp. Without a doubt, if you want to travel, it's one of the best. Despite not having the complete poise of a sedan, its 4.60 meters in length, 2.65-meter wheelbase, and manageable weight of 1.5 tons with driver combine perfectly with its technology, design, interior space, and, above all, a trunk that fits everything and is excellently compartmentalized. The design isn't bad at all, although when you see its sibling, the Proceed, you realize who got paid for design school and makeup and who didn't. I should also mention that when you realize the shooting brake loses 31 liters of trunk space and costs around €2,600 more according to the Korean brand's official website, you'll either fall head over heels for its rear end and incredible roofline, or you have money to burn, because the Ceed Tourer is clearly the smart buy, even though the Proceed is the most passionate option you can find at this level. Briefly mentioning the exterior design, which is perfectly adequate and achieves a remarkably modern look, the interior depends heavily on the trim level you choose. There are four options: the Tech, following the Concept and Drive trims, already includes an 8-inch navigation system, but the one we tested is the GT Line, which comes fully loaded, including the €2,800 Premium Pack. This pack includes a host of safety systems and smart seats, even with ventilation. And frankly, in terms of both appearance and quality, it's excellent, if not outstanding. It's true that prices increase depending on the trim level, but the equipment, especially in terms of safety and driver assistance features, is sometimes essential. Leaving aside the 120 hp three-cylinder engine, which I wouldn't recommend for this body style, we have two mild-hybrid options that qualify for the Eco label. The gasoline engine is a 1.5-liter with 160 hp, which we've already tested in the Hyundai i30 and is ideal if you don't generally travel much. The diesel we tested is a 1.6-liter with 136 hp, which is worthwhile if you travel even a little and exceed 20,000 kilometers per year. The diesel version costs only about 500 euros more, and the power seems sufficient, especially considering the 280 Nm of torque. You won't be the fastest off the line, but I doubt you're looking at this car because you want to be first around the next corner. Browsing the official website, we see that the prices are outrageous, even starting at €14,900… although the catch comes later when you realize that it's financed under rather strict conditions… but of course, that way you save a whopping €6,600. So, if you're the type to pay in cash, do the math beforehand, because what seems like a great deal will end up costing you a pretty penny. And also, keep in mind that there are quite a few compact cars with station wagon versions on the market, and most of them are probably cheaper, although the overall package offered by this Kia Ceed Tourer is quite well-rounded. Hyundai i30, Renault Megane, Opel Astra, Peugeot 308, Toyota Corolla, Seat Leon… there are quite a few station wagons derived from the C segment, each with its own characteristics, engines, practicality… and also prices, some of which are exorbitant. The car we tested, with the €2,800 Premium package, comes to €35,600 outright, or €29,000 with financing. I should also mention that the GT Line trim includes everything. A Ceed Tourer with the Tech trim, which is already more than adequate and comes with a lot of equipment, comes in at around €30,000, just a little more, MSRP. Fuel consumption is laughable. We got below 5 liters per 100 km effortlessly… with some city driving and a mountain pass, but also plenty of highway driving, which is what it's all about. On the 'Would I Buy It?' scale, the KIA Ceed Tourer scores an 8.2. It's an ideal car for families who love to travel, much better than an SUV, which is only justifiable if you have trouble getting in and out of the car, and little else. The price is perhaps a bit steep, a deterrent, but it's a well-rounded product.
