The Meyer-Optik Görlitz Domiron 50mm f2 is a legendary lens from the early 1960s. It has been described as “bokeh royalty.” In this video, I look at why the lens is so fascinating to aficionados of vintage lenses, and why its high price on-line fluctuates so much. I examine whether the lens has floating elements – some people say it does not, but if it does, it is one of the earliest standard lenses (if not the earliest) to have this lens design. The video shows how the lens performs wide-open and stopped-down, and then compares its performance with a selection of other old lenses. At the end of the video, I discuss how the lens ranks against the best old fast fifties and if it should indeed be considered as bokeh royalty.
