The district headquarters is located in Baran city. The district was formed on 10 April 1991. It was separated from Kota district to form a new district. Baran district is spread over an area of 6,992 km square. The district is also known for the Ramgarh crater where a huge crater has formed after the meteorite collapsed. It shares its borders with Guna in Madhya Pradesh and Kota district of Shivpuri, Rajasthan. Kali Sindh, Parvati River, Parvan River, Andheri River are the major rivers of Ban-Ganga district. According to the 2011 census, Baran district had a population of 12, 22,755. The Baran district has a sex ratio of 926 females for every 1000 males, and a literacy rate of 67.38%. The district has eight tehsils, viz. Anta, Baran, Atru, Chhabra, Mangrol, Kishanganj, Shahabad and Chhipabraud. Baran district comes under Jhalawar-Baran parliamentary constituency and is further divided into four assembly constituencies - Anta, Baran-Ataru, Kishanganj and Chhabra.
