For the last seven years, we’ve been building our furniture using birch ply; it’s a great plywood, which, although it has nearly tripled in price over that period, still remains ahead of everything else for quality. The problem comes with its weight; birch ply is heavy, like for like, over double that of lightweight ply. But lightweight ply has issues too. It’s not very dense, so makes fittings tricky; if you use traditional jointing methods, they can fail over time. It also needs a covering on its edge as it is no way near as pretty as birch if you leave the edge exposed. Now things have changed. With help from our supplier, we were able to specify a ply to our own requirements. Neat edges which replicate birch to give that lovely contemporary feel which is our signature look. It’s stronger than standard lightweight popular ply too, but still keeps the weight down. A win all round, we think.
