Pablo Escobar — Come un bambino povero divenne il criminale più ricco del mondo
Who was Pablo Escobar, really? Not the character on TV shows, not the pop icon printed on T-shirts, not the mythological figure that time has smoothed to the point of rendering him almost innocuous. In this hour-long documentary, we retrace the life of Pablo Emilio Escobar Gaviria in its entirety: from his origins in a poor family in the province of Antioquia, through his formative years as a criminal on the streets of Medellín, to the construction of the most powerful cartel in Latin American history and the all-out war that brought it to an end. This episode of Stories of Idols explores every stage of Escobar's life with documentary and narrative rigor: his childhood marked by the Colombian civil war known as La Violencia, his first contact with organized crime under the leadership of smuggler Álvaro Prieto, his discovery of the cocaine market, and the construction of a logistics network that would inundate the United States for over a decade. We analyze the birth of the Medellín cartel, its alliance with Carlos Lehder, José Rodríguez Gacha, and the Ochoa brothers, and the founding moment represented by the operation against the M-19 guerrilla group following the kidnapping of Marta Nieves Ochoa. We devote extensive space to the cartel's golden years, Escobar's personal wealth estimated at billions of dollars, the Hacienda Nápoles with its private zoo, his political ambitions, and the fatal conflict with Justice Minister Rodrigo Lara Bonilla. We reconstruct the open war against the Colombian state—the attacks, the political assassinations, the downing of a passenger plane with 111 passengers on board—and the perverse yet coherent logic that guided the cartel's every action. We recount the extraordinary story of La Catedral, the prison-palace that Escobar had built to his own specifications and from which he escaped in 1992, and the unprecedented coalition—the Colombian government, the CIA, the Cali cartel, and paramilitary militias—that formed to hunt him down. We close with the phone call of December 2, 1993, his final minutes on the roof of an anonymous house in Medellín, and a reflection on how Escobar's legend endures to this day, amid murals and pilgrimages to his tomb, tourist tours, and hippos swimming freely in the Magdalena River. This video neither glorifies nor condones Pablo Escobar's actions. The thousands of victims of the Medellín cartel's violence—police, magistrates, journalists, politicians, innocent civilians—are as central to our narrative as the protagonist himself. The goal is to understand, not celebrate: to understand how such a figure was able to emerge, thrive, and endure for so long, and what it tells us about the social, institutional, and cultural fragilities that enabled his rise.
