The House of the Eternal Queen of Portugal - Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Conception of Vila Viçosa
In the heart of Vila Viçosa, within the ancient castle walls, lies one of the most important places of worship in the history of Portugal: the Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, Queen and Patroness of Portugal. In this video, we explore the history of this unique place, from its medieval origins and the tradition linking it to D. Nuno Álvares Pereira, to its deep association with the House of Braganza, the Restoration of Independence and the reign of D. João IV. It was here that devotion to Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception became inseparable from the Portuguese national identity, culminating in the consecration of Portugal to the Immaculate Conception in 1646. Throughout the video, we visit the sanctuary, exploring in detail its chancel, the altars, the azulejos, the venerated image of Our Lady of the Conception, and the artistic and symbolic elements that make this temple much more than a church: a true monument to Portugal’s religious, political and cultural memory. Amidst the sacred art, architecture, Marian devotion, the War of Restoration and the legacy of the House of Braganza, we discover how Vila Viçosa became the home of the Queen and Patroness of Portugal. If you enjoy Portuguese history, heritage, religious architecture, national symbols and places steeped in history, join us on this tour of the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora da Conceição in Vila Viçosa.
