Welcome to the hidden gems of Barcarena and the royal elegance of Queluz! 🇵🇹✨ Today, we are embarking on a fascinating journey through time, exploring ancient archaeological wonders, historic military heritage, and one of Portugal’s most breathtaking royal palaces. Our adventure begins at the incredible Castro de Leceia, an important archaeological site that takes us back thousands of years. Established around 3000 BCE during the Chalcolithic (Copper Age), this fortified settlement is one of the most significant prehistoric sites in Europe, offering a rare glimpse into early human engineering. 🦴⛰️ From there, we immerse ourselves in the local heritage at the Paróquia de São Pedro de Barcarena, a parish with roots reaching back to the 16th century, and pass by the historic Tanque de Barcarena, an old community water tank that once served as the social hub for local washerwomen. ⛪💧 Next, we discover the charming 17th-century Capela de São Sebastião de Barcarena, built to protect the locals from plagues, and catch a glimpse of the beautiful Quinta de Nossa Senhora da Conceição (Sinel de Cordes) as we walk past. For some of the best views around, we hike up to the Vértice Geodésico Castelo, standing proud at 125 meters to offer a sweeping panorama of the region! 📐👀 We then visit the serene Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Piedade and take one more look at the fascinating Castro de Leceia before heading to our next big stop: the Former Gunpowder Factory of Barcarena (Fábrica da Pólvora). 💣🏭 Established in the 16th century, this massive complex was the powerhouse behind the black powder used by the Portuguese military during the Age of Discovery and later conflicts. Inside, we explore the lively Praça do Sol, admire the beautiful historic fountains (Fonte and Fonte - Fábrica da Pólvora), and check the unique Relógio Solar (sundial). We dive deep into industrial history at the Black Powder Museum, check out the impressive Tanque da Fábrica da Pólvora, and discover the ancient Ferrarias del Rey, where metalwork for the crown was forged. 🛠️🏛️ From Barcarena, we make our way to the royal town of Queluz! We arrive at the grand Largo Palácio de Queluz, passing by the Regiment Artilharia Anti-Aérea Nº1 and the majestic Palacete Almeida Araújo, an eclectic late 19th-century palace now used by the Portuguese Army. We spot the iconic Torre do Relógio de Queluz and pay our respects at the Estátua Dona Maria I, dedicated to Portugal's first undisputed queen regnant. 👑🕰️ Finally, it's time to step inside the magnificent Palace of Queluz (Palácio de Queluz)! Often referred to as the "Portuguese Versailles," this 18th-century masterpiece is one of the last great Rococo buildings designed in Europe, serving as the official residence for the royal family during the French invasions. We wander through its opulent royal halls before heading outside where the magic continues.
