Muhammad Muwanga Kivumbi's legal troubles have taken another dramatic turn after the National Unity Platform (NUP) leader was re-arrested just hours after securing bail from the International Crimes Division of the High Court. The latest development has sparked fresh political debate, with opposition leaders condemning the arrest while authorities have yet to provide a detailed public explanation for the new detention. Kivumbi, who had spent 169 days on remand over terrorism-related charges connected to the violence that followed Uganda's January 2026 general elections, was granted bail together with 16 co-accused persons. The court ordered him to pay a cash bail of Shs10 million while imposing conditions that included monthly reporting and restrictions on international travel without permission. However, celebrations among his supporters were short-lived. According to his lawyers and eyewitness accounts, Kivumbi was intercepted by security operatives while travelling through Mpigi District. He was reportedly removed from his vehicle and driven away in an unmarked vehicle commonly referred to as a "drone." Videos of the incident quickly spread across social media, generating widespread public reaction. The re-arrest has intensified criticism from opposition politicians and human rights advocates, who argue that the move undermines the court's decision to grant bail. Some legal experts have questioned why an individual released by court could immediately be detained again without an official explanation being made public. Government officials have previously linked Kivumbi to alleged election-related violence in Butambala District, where several people lost their lives following the January 2026 elections. Prosecutors accuse him and his co-accused of participating in attacks on a polling station and Kibibi Police Station. Kivumbi has consistently denied the allegations and maintains that the charges are politically motivated. The Uganda Law Society has also expressed concern over the latest arrest, calling on authorities to disclose Kivumbi's whereabouts and respect the rule of law. The case is expected to remain one of Uganda's most closely watched political and legal battles as investigations and court proceedings continue. Meanwhile, the government's anti-corruption campaign continues to gather momentum following the arrest of engineer Daniel Mufumba, the former Kamuli District Engineer, in connection with the alleged theft of more than Shs600 million intended for road construction and rehabilitation projects. The arrest followed months of investigations led by the State House Anti-Corruption Unit after Local Government Minister Balaam Barugahara reported the suspected fraud. Investigators allege that public funds meant for improving roads in Kamuli District were diverted through a private company allegedly linked to the engineer. According to investigators, the funds were processed through Raven Knights Ltd, a company reportedly registered under relatives of the engineer but believed to have been under his control. Authorities claim the money was approved for road works that were either never carried out or significantly exaggerated, resulting in major financial losses to the government. Before the engineer's arrest, the former Chief Administrative Officer and Chief Finance Officer of Kamuli District had already been taken into custody as part of the same investigation. Authorities say the engineer later transferred to Mbale City and allegedly went into hiding before being tracked down and arrested by security agencies. Following the arrest, Minister Balaam Barugahara praised the State House Anti-Corruption Unit and other security agencies for their persistence in pursuing corruption cases involving public funds. He stated that government officials who misuse taxpayers' money would continue to face prosecution regardless of their positions. The case has renewed public discussion about accountability in local governments, particularly regarding infrastructure projects funded by taxpayers. Many Ugandans have welcomed the arrests while calling for speedy court proceedings and the recovery of any stolen public funds if the suspects are found guilty.
