The Secret World of Heritage Mums: Uncovering Fall's Most Sophisticated Flowers

Hello Flower Friends! I'm Ellen. Sign up for my FREE weekly newsletter, FlowerNerd (https://ellenfrostflowers.substack.com/) for more flower fun! I write flower profiles, chronicle my flower adventures and share flower stories. In this video I make an arrangement of heritage mums. Mums are widely misunderstood. These are interesting, varied and sophisticated flowers. They are more than the potted dome-shaped plants from the garden center. Heritage and heirloom mums are specialty plants that have been passed through cuttings over generations by gardeners and farmers. You will need to buy these from specialty growers. They truly are my fall favorites. Before I start designing I review a few examples of the 13 classifications identified by the National Chrysanthemum Society. I show Mt. Asama, a wild incurve; Sheffield, a cute hardy or daisy type mum; Peter Magnus, a cascade; whirlaway, a spoon and others including unidentified stems. I took out my favorite vase made by a friend for this fall design. I start with silver dollar eucalyptus as a base. Many of the mums I use are large and branchy so they support each other in my wide-mouthed vase. After I fill in the space with big-bloomed mums, I add some smaller flowers like whirlaway with its quilled petals terminating in tiny spoons. The variety of shapes and textures all from mums create fantastic fall design. Join flower friends on all my online flower spaces. Subscribe to this channel to learn about sustainable floral design.
