Reid recorded a story told to him by the Northern Paiute: that a cave nearby held the remains of a red-haired people called the Si-Te-Cah, wiped out generations before in a final battle by fire and smoke. Reid wrote it down and moved on. He had no way of knowing that a quarter century later, a fertilizer mining operation would break into that exact cave — and find exactly what the story described.
