The 11 Million Pound Big Brutus That Tore Kansas Apart Is Still Rotting Where It Died — We Checked

Big Brutus weighed 11 million pounds, stood 160 feet tall, and could tear 150 tons of earth from the ground in a single bite. For 11 years, the enormous electric shovel worked around the clock, stripping away nearly a square mile of Kansas prairie every year to reach thin seams of coal buried deep below. It was designed to operate for 25 years. Instead, rising electricity costs and worsening mining conditions killed it after just 11. In 1974, Big Brutus climbed out of its final pit, shut down, and never moved again. Too large to relocate and too expensive to dismantle, the giant was abandoned in a Kansas field. More than 50 years later, volunteers are still fighting rust, wind, and rain to keep it standing. But even while silent, the machine remained dangerous—and decades after its motors stopped, a man lost his life climbing its massive boom. This is the story of the 11 million pound machine that ate the earth, outlived the industry that created it, and is now slowly rotting where it died.
