[단독] 트램 개통 차질 우려 현실화…“1년 이상 지연 불가피” / KBS 2026.06.16.

[Report] Heo Tae-jeong, the Mayor-elect of Daejeon, began receiving work reports from the Daejeon City government last week. On the second day of the reports, after receiving a report regarding the Urban Railway Line 2 tram, he expressed concern, stating, "There are many matters that need to be thoroughly inspected and many things to inform the citizens about." There was a valid reason for this reaction immediately following the report. KBS investigation confirmed that during the Urban Railway Construction Bureau's work report, Daejeon City reported that a delay of more than one year in the tram's opening was inevitable. The causes of the delay are twofold: delays in land compensation and an extension of the trial operation period. First, the compensation delay occurred in Section 12, around Seodaejeon Intersection. Initially, the plan was to complete land compensation for the road expansion of the underground section of the Seodaejeon Overpass by January; however, since negotiated compensation failed, compulsory acquisition procedures are currently underway. The process is expected to be completed around September. Consequently, the completion date for the entire tram line is also expected to be pushed back by approximately eight months. On top of this, the trial run period has also been doubled. Daejeon City initially planned to conduct trial runs for each completed section, allocating a period of six months. However, considering the judgment that trial runs are necessary only after the entire line opens, and taking into account the fact that the Wirye New Town tram, currently in the final stages of construction, recently extended its trial run period, the city reported to the Transition Committee that an additional six months are required. In conclusion, due to delays in compensation, the completion of the entire line has been postponed by eight months, and with the trial run period extended by six months, a delay of more than one year in the opening is now anticipated. As this long-standing, long-awaited project faces further delays and the period of traffic inconvenience for citizens is expected to increase, Mayor-elect Heo is reported to have ordered Daejeon City to come up with countermeasures. Daejeon City stated that the exact opening date will be determined following an integrated construction feasibility study, and announced plans to officially announce the current situation to the citizens soon.
