Texas Flooding Isn’t Over Yet: More Heavy Rain Tonight

The worst of this week’s historic Texas flooding appears to be behind us, but the threat is not over. Another round of heavy thunderstorms could produce new flooding across parts of the Concho Valley, Edwards Plateau, and Texas Hill Country tonight into Friday morning. Catastrophic flooding affected Uvalde, Kerr County, the Guadalupe River corridor, and portions of the Pedernales and Llano river basins today. Flood waves will continue moving downstream even after the heaviest rain has ended. The Weather Prediction Center maintains a High Risk of excessive rainfall across portions of the Edwards Plateau and Hill Country through tonight. Soils in the hardest-hit areas have received roughly 12 to 28 inches of rain over the last several days. Even relatively modest additional rainfall could quickly cause renewed flooding. Another cluster of heavy thunderstorms may develop tonight. This round does not currently appear as persistent or widespread as this morning’s event, but localized rainfall totals of 4 to 8 inches remain possible. The greatest concern would be additional heavy rain over Uvalde, Kerr, Medina, Gillespie, or other counties with saturated soils and ongoing river flooding. The threat should gradually shift west toward the Big Bend, Trans-Pecos, Permian Basin, Davis Mountains, and Borderland on Friday.
